The Bird Craft Museum

The Bird Craft Museum is a small but the first specialized museum in South Korea, located in Heuksando, an internationally important stopover site for migratory birds. It showcases a variety of wooden sculptures and crafts related to birds. Inside the museum, approximately 700 artworks are exhibited under three main themes: "Zosterops japonicus of Heuksando," "Birds of the World," and "Bird Crafts." Additionally, there is a Bird Sculpture Park outside the museum.

Zosterops japonicus on Heuksando Island

Zosterops japonicus, commonly known as "동박새" (Dongbak-sae) in Korean, is a small passerine bird primarily found along the southern and western coasts of Korea. It measures approximately 12cm and is characterized by a white border around its eyes. Heuksando Island is home to a significant population of Zosterops japonicus, and they are frequently observed in the camellia tree forests, known for their beautiful vocalizations and their preference for the nectar of red camellia flowers. The museum features 60 meticulously crafted wooden carvings of Zosterops japonicus, ordered from the United States to accurately represent the real birds.

Birds of the World

There are 10,546 species of birds inhabiting the Earth, categorized into 40 orders and 237 families. Among them, focusing on small mountain birds, the museum displays over 200 bird wood carvings from around 30 families, all crafted in the United States.

Bird Crafts of the World

Since 2012, a collection of over 450 bird crafts from around the world, purchased during official duties such as visits to advanced areas and personal schedules including travel, has been on display. These crafts were acquired from 20 different countries by the officials of Shinan County.

Bird Sculpture Park

The Bird Sculpture Park covers an area of 8,500 square meters with a viewing path of 480 meters. It features over 200 bird sculptures from Zimbabwe Shona, Africa on display.
